Penn FC Earns 1-1 Draw at Charlotte

Penn FC News Release

MATTHEWS, N.C. - Aaron Dennis' second-half equalizer snapped Penn FC's recent two match losing streak with a 1-1 draw at the Charlotte Independence Saturday evening. The result on the road provides a crucial point as the team pursues a playoff spot.

Despite Charlotte drawing first blood in the 64th minute, Dennis provided the goal Penn FC needed to snag a result eight minutes later.

Harri Hawkins played a through ball from midfield that Dennis snagged from an approaching defender. He quickly turned towards goal and ripped off a rocket from the top of the box and into the right upper 90.

Charlotte found its opening goal with a long ball down the left wing that found midfielder Alex Martinez deep in the Penn FC half. After working the ball down toward the endline, Martinez crossed the ball to forward Éamon Zayed on the back post. Zayed nodded the ball just inside the post to give the hosts the lead.

Penn FC were the aggressors for much of the match with seven of its 11 shots coming in the second half.

Head Coach Raoul Voss' side hustled throughout the second half as it won nearly 59 percent of the duels as well as holding 58 percent of the possession. Voss's men proved their mental resolve again scoring its 19th second half goal.

The visitors came inches from finding a winner twice in the 94th minute. First, a blistering run from Prince Baffoe through the backline resulted in Jorge Rivera being left alone in the middle of the box. Baffoe played the ball back to Rivera, but the Puerto Rican forward's shot was blocked by a last-ditch tackle from Charlotte defender Bilal Duckett.

Penn FC is back in action Friday, Aug. 3 to take on New York Red Bulls II at MSU Soccer Park. The match kicks off at 7 p.m. and can be streamed on ESPN+.
