Vermont Frost Heaves News Release

BARRE - For the second time in five days the Manchester Millrats defeated the Vermont Frost Heaves 106-99 on a frigid night in Central Vermont.

Early on it almost appeared as though the Millrats were going to run away with the victory as they took a nine point lead into the second quarter, 25-16. The Heaves would have none of it, though, as they entered the second quarter firing with John Williams and Joe Nixon nailing back-to-back threes spurring an 8-0 run that closed the gap to five, 34-29. Greg Plummer and Richard Millsap continued the scoring with deep threes as Vermont whittled the Manchester lead to one before Regis Koundja's jumper tied the game at 41-41 with 4:23 remaining in the half. Desmond Ferguson responded for Manchester, though, draining back-to-back jumpers to put the Millrats up by four at the break, 54-52.

Both teams struggled to take care of the ball in the third frame, but with Vermont's shots not dropping, Manchester was able to build a seven point lead midway through the quarter. The Frost Heaves closed the quarter on a tear, though, as Richard Millsap, John Williams, Brandon Cole and Greg Stevenson contributed to the team's 10-0 run to close out the quarter and take the 76-72 lead.

Manchester's Sam Carey opened the scoring in the fourth with back to back hoops, and the teams traded buckets until Carey's lay up gave the Millrats the 86-84 lead, one that they would never relinquish. Ferguson sandwiched a pair of threes around a Vermont turnover opening up the 92-84 lead with 3:39 remaining. Plummer did his best to keep the Heaves in the game, sinking three triples in the final minutes, but the Millrats held their composure and hung on for their second straight win over the Frost Heaves.

John Williams led Vermont with 20 points on 6-for-9 shooting, while Plummer and Stevenson contributed 15 apiece. Vermont's Benson Callier who entered the game as the PBL's third leading scorer was held to just six points.

Ferguson led the way for the Millrats with 23 points on 9-for-17 shooting while Lincoln Glass notched 15 and Carey and Marlowe Currie each contributed 14.

With the loss the Frost Heaves fall to 1-2 while the Millrats improve to 2-2. Vermont squares off against the Halifax Rainmen tomorrow night in Burlington; tip off is scheduled for 7:05.
