Vermont Frost Heaves News Release
Burlington - Greg Plummer sank a three-pointer, his sixth of the game, with 50 seconds to play to lock up the Vermont Frost Heaves' 107-99 defeat of the Halifax Rainmen at Memorial Auditorium on Friday night.
Halifax forward Rob Sanders had cut Vermont's lead to a single point moments earlier with a couple of free throws, but Frost Heaves guard John Williams stole the ball on the visitors' next possession and found Plummer for the clinching shot.
Greg Stevenson and Williams sealed the victory with free throws the rest of the way.
After nursing a one-point lead midway through the second quarter, the Frost Heaves went on a 14-5 run to seize a 56-46 lead at the half. Vermont's advantage held steady at 80-70 after three quarters.
But then Sanders went to work, leading a Halifax charge that brought the visitors to within four points with five minutes to play, and two with three minutes left.
Vermont's Joe Nixon sank his fourth three-pointer of the game to edge the hosts back out to a five-point lead and, after Sanders sank four unanswered free throws, set the stage for Plummer's big shot.
Williams led all scorers with 25 points, including four three-pointers of his own. Plummer added 22 and Nixon 16 for the Heaves, who have never lost in Burlington in the franchise's three seasons of existence.
Sanders led Halifax, 3-2, with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Glen Dandridge added 15.
Vermont, 2-2, has an interdivisional date at defending Premier Basketball League champion Rochester on Martin Luther King Day, a match-up that will air as the PBL Game of the Week on atsportstv.com at 5 p.m. on Monday.
After two more road games, at Quebec and Monrtreal, the Frost Heaves return home for a Jan. 31 matinee rematch with Halifax at the Barre Auditorium. That Saturday will be Bump the Moose's Birthday, with all the action beginning at 1:05 p.m.
