Frontier Greys Returning to Highland for 2015

December 1, 2014 - Frontier League (FL) - Frontier Greys News Release

Sauget, IL - The Frontier League is proud to announce that the Frontier Greys will be based out of Highland, Illinois, again for the 2015 season. The Greys used Highland as their base for the 2014 season after spending 2013 in Ohio.

The Frontier Greys will be holding their spring training at Glik Park in Highland, with players reporting on Wednesday, April 29 and workouts beginning on Thursday, April 30. The Greys will practice at Glik Park throughout the two-week spring training.

Following spring training, the Greys will return to Highland when they play at the Gateway Grizzlies, River City Rascals, and Southern Illinois Miners in addition to off-days throughout the summer. Overall, the Greys will be in Highland on 75 dates from April 29 through September 7.

The Greys play nine games at Gateway in 2015, including a special Memorial Day afternoon contest and for fireworks shows on July 3 and 4. They also have nine games at River City, Southern Illinois, Evansville, Joliet, and Schaumburg while visiting the remaining seven teams for six games each.

Mark Rosen, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Highland, was instrumental in working with the Greys during 2014 and ensuring their return for 2015. Mark commented, "People in Highland are excited to hear that the Frontier Greys will be returning to Highland for the 2015 season and for the host families, they are especially anxious to welcome players after the relationships that they developed last year. The Parks and Recreation department is also pleased to receive this news because the players were able to add a boost of excitement for the youth when they interacted with them on their days off while being professional and courteous to everyone."

"We were overwhelmed with the support that the players received from the Highland community last season," said Steve Tahsler, Deputy Commissioner for the Frontier League. "The team spoke positively about their experiences in Highland all summer, and I noticed Greys fans traveling to support the team throughout the season. Basing the club out of Highland was our first choice for 2015, and we are thrilled that we will be able to do so."

The Frontier Greys will be hosting a "Thank You Highland" event from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM on Wednesday, December 17 at E.L. Flanagan's restaurant for people who served as host families during the 2014 season and those interested in housing a Greys player in 2015. Interested families can RSVP for the event by calling 618-215-4134 or e-mailing [email protected] .

The Frontier Greys are entering their third season in the Frontier League. The team finished 2014 with a 29-66 record. Two players, outfielder Cameron Monger and first baseman Joe Rapp, were selected for the Frontier League All-Star Game, while two others, left handed pitcher Spencer Medick (Arizona Diamondbacks) and catcher Michael Vaughn (Colorado Rockies) had their contracts purchased by Major League Baseball organizations.

The Frontier League is entering its 23rd season in 2015 as the oldest and largest independent league. The Frontier League includes 14 teams stretching from Pennsylvania to Missouri and from Kentucky to Northern Michigan. Over 1,200 former Frontier League players have signed with MLB organizations, with 26 advancing to play Major League Baseball. 43 players had their contracts purchased during the 2014 season.
