Grand Rapids Hoops News Release

The Continental Basketball Association's Grand Rapids HOOPS enter the final weekend of the 2002-03 regular season in a heated battle with the Gary Steelheds for the final American Conference playoff berth. In Wednesday night's 116-91 victory over the Yakima Sun Kings, the HOOPS earned all seven quarter points to give them a three quarter point advantage with just two games remaining in the regular season.

Grand Rapids (22-24, 162.0 quarter points) will first travel to face the Steelheads on Friday night at the Genesis Convention Center in perhaps their most important game of the season. Gary recently has crept into the playoff picture, winning five of their last seven games to even their record at 23-23. Grand Rapids currently holds a 6-4 advantage in the team's season series, however, the Steelheads four victories have come in the last six meetings. The HOOPS can clinch the final playoff spot if they are able to earn six quarter points in the contest.

On Saturday, the HOOPS will complete their regular season schedule by hosting former Michigan State-standout Marcus Taylor and the Sioux Falls Skyforce. Sioux Falls (17-29) struggled mightily throughout the first two months of the season, but has been able to right the ship in recent weeks. Winners of seven of their last 11 games, Sioux Falls will be looking to end the season on a good note, despite being eliminated from the playoffs weeks ago.

The 2003 CBA playoffs begin on March 11, with a best-of-five series to decide conference American and National Conference champions and the teams that will compete for the Jay Ramsdell Championship trophy. The Rockford Lightning, Dakota Wizards, and Yakima Sun Kings each previously clinched playoff berths.
