San Angelo Saints News Release

SAN ANGELO – The San Angelo Saints today announced that last season's top defenseman Matt Frick has agreed to return to the team and signed a contract for the 2003-04 season. Frick is entering his 3rd pro season after finishing up his college playing career at Lake Superior State University. The native of West Bloomfield, Michigan was 3rd among Saints defensemen in scoring last season with 5 goals and 24 assists for 29 points in 61 games, all new career highs. At the end of the season he was honored with the team's Best Defensemen award.

"Matt is a young player that has an outstanding future," said Saints head coach Ray Edwards. "Last season he showed that he can score as well as play good defensively and he is going to be one of the guys we really count on to solidify our defense and add some scoring from the back."

Frick began his pro career with the Richmond Renegades of the ECHL in 2001 and was a late signing for the Saints just before last season began. As an unknown commodity, Frick started the year playing well defensively, garnering interest from several teams in the higher-level AHL. As the season progressed he also blossomed into an offensive threat scoring 4 goals and 15 assists over the final 34 games of the season, including 5 multi-point games in that stretch. His career stats are listed below.

"Matt proved last season that he can be a top defenseman in this league," added Edwards. "We want guys that have the drive to try to move up to the next level and will try our best to help them do that. In the mean time we are counting on him to have another good season in a Saints uniform."

At 6-0 and 195 pounds, the 26-year old Frick joins Konrad Brand (6-3, 235 lbs), Derek Booth (6-1, 200 lbs) and Corri Moffat (6-0, 210 lbs) on the current Saints defensive corps.

"We have to be tighter and more physical defensively than the team was last year," said Edwards. "These four guys all have the size and skills to do that and will also work with the younger guys we are bringing in to help them develop in the same way."

Saints Training Camp starts October 5th with preseason games scheduled Oct. 10th (home) and 11th (away) against Odessa. The team's home opener is Oct. 18th against the expansion Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. Season tickets and multi-game ticket and voucher packs are available at the Saints office at 3111 Knickerbocker Road and at the San Angelo Convention Center. For ticket info call 944-6253.
