FRESNO, Calif. - The Round of 16 in the Fresno Famous Bobblehead Tournament, presented by The Fresno Bee and PG&E, featured a powerhouse matchup between KMPH Great Day anchor Kopi Sotiropulos and Univision Arriba Valle Central anchor Lupita Lomeli that collected a staggering 59,821 votes. In the final hours of voting, Kopi took the lead and held on with 52.34% of the vote to secure placement in the Round of 8. Since the bobblehead tournament began on March 9th, 411,500 total votes have been cast at FresnoGrizzlies.com
Cinderella stories are also alive as Sheriff Margaret Mims and retired WIBA, IWBF, and IBA World Champion professional boxer Jenifer Alcorn defeated the late Jerry Tarkanian and Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, respectively. Mims has defeated Police Chief Jerry Dyer (1st RD), MLB Hall of Famer Tom Seaver (2nd RD) and now Tarkanian to move into the final eight, while Alcorn has bested fellow boxer Jose Ramirez, ABC30 Sports Director Tommy Tran and now Carr.
In a Round of 16 matchup that leveraged national fan bases, Portland Trail Blazers center and San Joaquin Memorial grad Robin Lopez edged MLB Network host and Clovis West grad Heidi Watney by roughly one-percent. The trio remaining from Q97 FM saw only morning show host Greg Hoffman advance, as Danny Salas fell to Ickey Woods and Yo Boy Dub lost out to Mayor Ashley Swearengin.
The Round of 8 begins voting Tuesday at 10 a.m. PT at FresnoGrizzlies.com and runs until 5 p.m. PT on March 29th. The final three rounds move away from unlimited voting, urging fans to have as many of their family, friends and co-workers cast a vote.
The four matchups in the Round of 8 are below:
Kopi Sotiropulos vs. Richard Kiel || Sheriff Margaret Mims vs. Ickey Woods
Jenifer Alcorn vs. Robin Lopez || Greg (Q97) vs. Mayor Ashley Swearengin
The overall winner of the tournament, announced on April 6th, will have their likeness placed on a bobblehead that is given to the first 1,500 fans at the Grizzlies Saturday, August 22nd home game vs. Round Rock, Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers.
To determine the winner, the Grizzlies continue to run an online March Madness style bracket on FresnoGrizzlies.com that allows fans to vote for their favorite(s).
