New York, NY - Mia Hamm scored two goals as the Washington Freedom blanked the New York Power, 4-0 at Mitchel Athletic Complex. Hamm's running mate, Abby Wambach recorded three assists on the evening. Washington goalkeeper Siri Mullinix made four saves, recording her fifth win of the season.. With the win, Mullinix extended her unbeaten streak to twelve games.
The Freedom moved to 5-1-1 (16 points) while the Power dropped to 3-5-0 (9 pts) and picked up their third home loss of the season. The win keeps the Freedom in first place.
New York started the game fast, recording the first three shots of the game. In the fourth minute, Emily Janss' corner kick found an open Anita Rapp. Rapp took a quick shot that beat Freedom goalkeeper Siri Mullinix, only to have a sure goal cleared off the goal line by Jacqui Little. Three minutes later, Rapp went one-on-one with Mullinix, having her shot saved by the Washington goalkeeper.
Washington took the lead in the eighth minute, when Hamm recorded her fifth goal on the season. Mullinix started the play with a long kick that found Wambach's head. Wambach flicked the ball onto a streaking Hamm, who was able to outrace the Power defense and beat goalkeeper Carly Smolak.
In the 41st minute, referee Rachel Woo whistled for a penalty kick in the Power's box. Power defender Shannon Boxx pulled down Freedom forward Jacqui Little. Hamm converted the penalty kick, pushing a shot to the left of Smolak, who dove to her right. It was Hamm's sixth goal, and her fourth penalty kick conversion of the 2003 season.
The Freedom was able to push a third goal across just before the end of the half. Hamm's corner kick in the 44th minute, found the head of Wambach, who in turn flicked the ball onto Lindsay Stoecker who headed the ball home past a diving Smolak.
The Power weren't able to really get anything going, and the Freedom added a goal in the 89th minute. Wambach was able to get to a loose ball in the Power's penalty area, and neatly cut a pass back to second half sub Casey Zimny.. Zimny one-timed the pass by a diving Smolak for her first career goal, and first WUSA points.
These two teams will meet again on March 31, when they play an exhibition game in Rochester, NY, the hometown of Abby Wambach.
