Atlanta Vision News Release
SUWANEE, GA - May 29, 2007 - Vision of Excellence, a non-profit 501(c)(3) extension of the Atlanta Vision ABA professional basketball team, is pleased to announce "A New Vision for You" 2007 summer program for girls. GoGirlGo! Atlanta , a partnership among the Atlanta Women's Foundation, the Women's Sports Foundation, and Kaiser Permanente, has generously provided support for this program for the second year in a row.
"A New Vision for You" is a 10-week summer program primarily targeted for overweight young girls ages 8 to 11 of Gwinnett and Henry County . The purpose of the program is to expose girls to exercise through dance, encourage healthy lifestyle choices, promote positive self-esteem, provide a foundation for healthy activities, and utilize the GoGirlGo! educational program to build their leadership skills. Participants will receive fitness attire, educational materials, healthy snacks, new friends, and over 40 hours of physical activity. The staff for "A New Vision for You" includes the positive and talented young women of the Atlanta Vision Dance Team.
"Our organization enjoys contributing to the wellness of young girls to build healthier communities," states Vision of Excellence Executive Director Akilah Townsend. "Expanding our program into Henry County has been exciting and allows us to serve more girls," adds Vision choreographer Vanessa Gibson.
The GoGirlGo! Curriculum is designed for girls utilizing champion athletes and four GoGirlGo! characters to educate girls about health risk behaviors and life lessons such as body image, bullying, diversity, smoking, drugs, and stress. GoGirlGo! features true-life stories from champion athletes like Brandi Chastain, Mia Hamm, Lisa Fernandez, Mary Riddell, Jennifer Rodriguez and Tamika Catchings.
