Wachusett Dirt Dawgs News Release
LEOMINSTER, Mass - (April 21, 2014) The Wachusett Dirt Dawgs announced today that they will be joined by three players from Franklin Pierce University for the 2014 season at Doyle field; Mike Lundin, a freshman right handed pitcher; Kurtis White, a sophomore middle infielder; and Jay Jabs, a freshman 3rd baseman and outfielder.
Coach King's Franklin Pierce Ravens were the NCAA East Region Champions in 2013 and are a perennial NE-10 powerhouse with over 30 wins per season the past 12 years; and have seen 25 of their players chosen in the MLB draft during that time. Currently the Ravens are ranked 26th nationally in NCAA DII baseball.
Mike Lundin, a 6'1'' righty hails from Kingston Ma, where he attended Silver Lake Regional High School. Mike was a two time All Star selection and was named to the Patriot Ledger All Scholastic selection as a senior. Mike is looking forward to a great summer's worth of baseball in Leominster. Mike has enjoyed early success pitching out of the bullpen this spring for Franklin Pierce, with eight appearances, one save and a 2.89 ERA.
Another Franklin Pierce player to join the Dirt Dawgs this summer is Kurtis White, a 6 ft lefthanded hitter from Nahant, Mass., where he attended St. Mary's High School. Before Franklin Pierce Kurtis spent one year attending UMass, Boston, and was a teammate of 2013 Dirt Dawgs All-Star Jamill Moquete. Before college Kurtis was a four year letter winner at St Mary's high school and a three time Lynn Item All Star selection. White was also named three times All-league selection and honored with the team MVP award as a senior.
At UMass, Boston Kurtis played in 34 games including 28 starts were he was primarily an infielder. He hit .255 over 94 at bats and also pitched 9.2 innings with a 4.66 ERA. This Spring Kurtis has played in 17 games, contributing two hits in 19 At-bats. Kurtis is looking forward to playing in the Futures League this summer especially with the Dirt Dawgs and to meeting new people on and off the field.
Rounding out the Franklin Pierce trio is Jay Jabs, a 6 ft left-handed hitting 3rd baseman and outfielder from Schwenksville, Pennsylvania where he graduated from Perkiomen Valley High School. Jabs was an All-Area Second team selection as a senior and named the team's offensive player of the year as a freshman. Jay is looking forward to having a successful summer as a member of the Dirt Dawgs.
This spring Jay is starting for the Ravens at third base and having a terrific first season as a Raven. Freshmen have traditionally had a tough time cracking Coach King's lineup, and only one has had over 100 Plate appearances the past two years as a result. Jabs is currently batting in the heart of the Ravens' lineup, hitting .235 with five home runs to lead the team and 24 RBIs in 41 games and 153 At-bats.
Dirt Dawgs Head Coach Barnaby on the signings, "Bringing in three players from the highly regarded Franklin Pierce program only illustrates the talent level joining us in Leominster this summer; from what I've seen of our projected roster, we are going to put some pressure on the other teams in the League."
