North Shore Honu News Release
North Shore used a five-run fourth inning to gain its largest lead of the game, and held on to defeat Waikiki, 7-4, tonight at Waipahu's Hans L'Orange Park.
Matt McBride led North Shore's 13-hit attack with two base hits including a triple, and two RBIs. Kyle Martin added a pair base knocks including a double, and teammates Kurt Mertins, Kenji Sato and Sung Woo Jang notched two hits apiece.
Waikiki (6-9) jumped out to a 3-1 advantage in the first inning thanks in part to Tony Thomas' leadoff triple followed by a pair of RBI doubles from Alfredo Silverio and Yonder Alonso.
Yamaico Navarro chipped in his first home run of the season, a solo shot over the right field fence in the second inning, to pull North Shore to within a run of the lead. Thomas, however, put the BeachBoys up 4-2 in the home half of the frame when Thomas tripled to right field, and came home to score on Sato's errant throw.
North Shore (6-9) took the lead for good in the fourth frame thanks to a five-run outburst in which all nine Honu hitters batted, and the first four reached on base hits.
Jason Godin (1-1) earned his first win as a starter with the Honu, tossing four innings through which he struck out six and surrendered three earned runs on six hits. Three Honu relievers held Waikiki scoreless through the game's final five innings, with Chris Hicks gaining the save after tossing a scoreless ninth frame.
Waikiki starter Yuhei Takai did not factor in the decision despite allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out six through three frames. Jordan Pratt (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs on five hits through two innings of relief.
The BeachBoys move over to Les Murakami Stadium tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. for the first of a three-game set with the Honolulu Sharks. North Shore faces the West Oahu CaneFires tomorrow evening at Hans L'Orange Park, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
