Columbus Wardogs News Release
Columbus, GA - The Columbus Wardogs arena football team will be bigger, faster, stronger and more experienced in 2003. New head coach John Fourcade has announced his 35-man training camp roster, which includes some of the top players from af2 teams that are not returning for the 2003 season.
Fourcade's biggest catch may be the addition of the Tallahassee Thunder's top two players from last year. WR/LB Mesiah Porter was the Thunder's leading scorer with 35 touchdowns (22 rushing and 13 receiving). He was also Tallahassee's leading tackler with 53 ½ tackles, four fumble recoveries and three interceptions.
WR/DB James Dickerson was Tallahassee's leading receiver and kickoff returner last year. Dickerson caught 78 passes for 1,077 yards and 13 touchdowns, while also adding 860 yards and three scores in kickoff returns.
In addition to Porter and Dickerson, Fourcade was also able to get some of the key players from the Augusta Stallions (OL/DL John Cratic and FB/LB Leonard Lucas) and Mobile Wizards (WR/DB Mike Motton and DS Dennis Skains). Skains was Mobile's second-leading tackler last year with 51 ½ tackles, four interceptions and three fumble recoveries.
The training camp roster includes seven returning Wardogs: OL/DL Jay Carmack, OL/DL Darin Damron, FB/LB Demarco Johnson, WR/DB Terence Samuel, OS Michael Scott, and OL/DL Chuck Webb. Former Georgia star Derrick Byrd (OL/DL), who "retired" at the end of last season, has reconsidered and will try to earn a spot on this year's team after meeting the new coaching staff.
