New England Revolution News Release
U.S. MEN'S National Team head coach Bruce Arena has named four stars of the New England Revolution to his roster for the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The quartet will be in contention to perform on home soil when the US takes on Costa Rica at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts on Tuesday, July 12 (kickoff 7pm).
Goal-scoring midfielder Clint Dempsey, striker Pat Noonan and midfielder Steve Ralston are joined by goalkeeper Matt Reis, who is one of only two players on the squad not yet honored at international level. A fifth Revolution player, midfielder Felix Brilliant, has been selected for Canada, which faces Cuba at Gillette Stadium at 9pm on July 12, following the U.S. game.
"This is a great opportunity to further the continuity of our group, and to get a chance to look at players in meaningful matches," said Arena, who holds a 10-1-2 lifetime record in the Gold Cup and a championship title in 2002. "We have a blend of experience and some new faces, and these games will be very important. We are certainly entering the tournament with the goal of winning the competition."
The New England Revolution boasts a Major League Soccer-high four players among the ranks of the U.S. team, which will meet up for a training camp in Portland, OR, on June 26 before kicking off the Gold Cup quest on July 7 in Seattle. Ralston and Dempsey are tied with the most appearances for the U.S. this year, having each played in seven of eight matches.
The U.S. enters the 2005 tournament with an unblemished 16-0-0 record in group play, having posted shutouts in 19 of 31 all-time Gold Cup games. Should the U.S. advance as the first or second place finisher in the group, their quarterfinal match up would take place on Saturday, July 16 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro.
Felix Brilliant was named to Canada's 23-man roster by head Coach Frank Yallop. "This is a good tournament to blood some youngsters and give them a chance," said Yallop. "I just want to perform well, get some good games in, try and get as far as we can in the competition. It's going to be tough but I would say Costa Rica and Cuba are saying the same thing: it's going to be tough group."
Gold Cup tickets are on sale priced from $22 to $40 (call 1-877-GET REVS or Ticketmaster on 617-931-2222). Discounts are available on group ticket purchases.
