Port Huron Icehawks News Release
PORT HURON, MI - Steve Rymsha netted a pair of goals and two assists on Saturday to lead the Port Huron Icehawks to a 9-1 routing of the Flint Generals at McMorran Arena.
It was Rymsha's first encounter with his former team since a trade sent him to Port Huron for Jeff Zehr in mid-February. He led an offensive outburst that saw four Icehawks turn in a pair of goals and 14 of 16 skaters on the ice tally at least one point. Tab Lardner, Kris Vernarsky and Jeremy Tucker each scored twice for Port Huron. Nick Lindberg dished out three assists.
The Icehawks landed six consecutive goals through the first two periods of play and went on to put up their highest offensive output of the season.
The Icehawks outshot the Generals 16-5 in the first period and emerged with a 2-0 lead. Vernarsky kicked off the onslaught with a goal at 15:03. Several minutes later, Rymsha landed his first of the night on the power play to make it a two goal game.
The Icehawks offense did not back down in the second period, notching four straight goals to take a 6-0 lead. Jason Chafe, Rymsha, Tucker, and Lardner had the second period goals for Port Huron.
Flint got on the board when Zach Pearson scored at 3:25 in the first period. The Icehawks were not finished, however, and landed three more goals to make it a 9-1 contest. The third period goals were scored by Lardner, Tucker and Vernarsky. Tucker's goal came on the power play.
The Icehawks outshot the Generals 55-19. Icehawks goalie Ryan Mior had 18 saves. Chad Alban played the first two periods for Flint and made 28 saves on 34 shots, before being replaced by Adam Dekker who made 18 saves on 21 shots. The Icehawks were 2-6 on the power play and Flint was 0-3.
The game marked the first time that the Icehawks have met the Generals since February 13. The Icehawks won that game 8-1.
With the win, the first place Icehawks (37-18-5-2) now hold a four point lead over the second place Fort Wayne Komets. The Komets moved into second tonight with a win and a Muskegon loss. The Generals, who were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention last weekend, dip to 18-40-2-4.
The Icehawks return to McMorran Arena tomorrow for a showdown with Muskegon. Tickets for the game are just $5 for kids 14-and-under and seniors 62-and-over. A Skate with the Players event will also be held following the game.
