Quad City Mallards News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - David Hukalo, Kaleigh Shrock and Colin Chaulk provided a goal and an assist apiece and the host Fort Wayne Komets survived a comeback bid by the Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, to score a 5-3 victory Friday night.
The Komets took control by scoring four straight goals after the Mallards grabbed a 1-0 lead a mere 23 seconds into the game when Obi Aduba buried Brandon Marino's centering pass.
The Komets struck twice from a close range in a span of just 35 seconds later in the first to turn the one goal deficit into a 2-1 lead. Hukalo tied the game at 6:21 and Konstantin Shafronov snapped the deadlock at 6:56.
The Komets produced another pair of goals in the second period. Shrock's solo rush stretched the Fort Wayne lead to 3-1 at 2:12 of the second period. The gap widened to 4-1 on Justin Chwedoruk's tip-in at 9:07 of second.
Aduba snapped the Komet string by scoring his second of the night off a goal mouth scramble at the 15:45 mark of the second.
The Mallards pulled back within one goal with 3:14 left in the third period when Juris Stals scored from the side of the net with Quad City up 6-on-3 following a pair of Fort Wayne penalties and the removal of Mallard goaltender Kyle Jones.
Mallard comeback hopes were finally quashed when Chaulk scored into an empty net with just under a minute remaining.
The Mallards return to action on home ice tomorrow evening at 7:05 p.m. against the Flint Generals. The Mallards will team with Genesis Health System to hold their 15th Annual Jersey Auction to benefit the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House after Saturday night's game. The Mallards will wear their special edition black third jerseys during the game and those sweaters will go up for bid in the live auction immediately after that contest. Saturday evening is also John Deere Community Night. Courtesy of John Deere, tickets for Saturday night's game are available for just $5. Discounted tickets for that contest can be purchased in person at the i wireless Center box office or by calling the Mallards' business office at (309) 277-1364.
