MOLINE, Ill. - Sean O'Connor scored twice and picked up one assist and Nick Boucher made 19 saves as the host Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, were blanked 5-0 by the Fort Wayne Komets Saturday night.
The Komets first grabbed the lead while shorthanded when Frankie DeAngelis finished off a 2-on-1 rush from the right wing circle at 14:36 of the first period.
The second period proved crucial as Komets tightened their grip on the game by scoring a pair of power play goals while outshooting the Mallards 26-3 in the middle frame. At the tail end of a four minute Komet power play O'Connor made it 2-0 with a drive from the right wing circle. The Komets were up 5-on-3 when Konstantin Shafronov stretched the lead to three from point blank range at the 13:32 mark.
Third period even strength goals from O'Connor- from the slot- and Leo Thomas- on a wraparound- finished the job for Fort Wayne.
The Mallards will visit the Dayton Gems tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The Mallards are next in action on home ice next Friday night, February 19 at 7:05 p.m. against the Muskegon Lumberjacks.
