Fort Lauderdale Strikers News Release
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (June 30, 2013 ) - The Fort Lauderdale Strikers have relieved Daryl Shore of his head coaching duties effective immediately. Goalkeeper/Assistant Coach Ricardo Lopes will take over as interim coach until a new head coach is named.
"It is imperative that the Fort Lauderdale Strikers continue with a winning tradition, and unfortunately the team has not performed well this year under Daryl Shore," said Strikers President Tom Mulroy. "We are currently in serious conversations with more than one party that are more than capable of leading the team in the future."
"Daryl has been a true professional for the past three years, and we wish him the best of luck with his future career," said Managing Director of Team and Stadium Development Tim Robbie.
Lopes is now in his eighth season with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, serving as the team's goalkeeping and assistant coach. In his tenure as goalkeepers' coach, Lopes has mentored many outstanding pros, including Josh Saunders, Caleb Patterson-Sewell, Pat Hannigan and current Strikers' goalkeeper Matt Glaeser. Lopes also enjoyed a standout career as a player in Brazil. With Fluminense from 1983-1985, he won three Rio de Janeiro state championships in a row and in 1984 helped Fluminense win the Brazilian national championship.
The Strikers next game will be against their cross-state rivals, the Tampa Bay Rowdies, in St. Petersburg on July 4 at 6:30 p.m. This will mark the Strikers' final game of the Spring Season for the NASL. The Strikers will then travel to New York to face their historic rival, the New York Cosmos, on Aug. 3 in the opening game of the Fall Season.
