Fort Lauderdale CF Wraps up Home Stand vs. FC Tucson on Sunday
August 20, 2021 - United Soccer League One (USL1)
Fort Lauderdale CF News Release
Fort Lauderdale CF will wrap up a three-game home stand on Sunday, Aug. 22. The team will take on FC Tucson at DRV PNK Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET and the match will air live on ESPN+.
"I think we have to keep fine-tuning things. These guys now have a good rhythm in the season heading into the last 10 games of the season...It's not the table at the start of the year or the middle of the year, it's what happens towards the end. We know this is the business end of the season where every point matters," said head coach Darren Powell. "[Tucson] is a good team. They're well put together by the coach Jon [Pearlman]. We expect them to be very, very competitive."
In its last two games at home, Fort Lauderdale CF fell to a 2-3 defeat against North Carolina FC but bounced back with a 2-0 victory over the reigning League One champion Greenville Triumph SC. The 2-0 victory was earned through capitalizing on offensive opportunities, with forwards Shaan Hundal and Mitch Curry each chipping in with their sixth goals of the season, as well as a strong defensive effort, as the team kept a clean sheet for the second time this season.
Curry was named to the USL League One Team of the Week for Week 19 thanks to his goal and assist against Greenville. George Acosta, meanwhile, registered an assist on Curry's goal, his seventh of the season, tied for first in the category among all League One players.
Looking to carry the momentum from the weekend win, Fort Lauderdale CF faces FC Tucson for the third time this season. In the previous bouts, Fort Lauderdale CF won 5-1 at home in mid-May, but then fell to FC Tucson 2-1 on the road in early July.
FC Tucson currently sits in 11th place in the USL League One table with four wins, eight losses, and four draws for a total of 16 points. The team has been led by goalkeeper Wallis Lapsley, who is currently third in League One with 47 saves.
Fort Lauderdale CF, meanwhile, moved up to eighth in the table with the win over Greenville, bringing the team within one point of the playoff line. The team also leads League One in goals scored with 27.
