Florida Firecats News Release
Estero, FL- The Florida Firecats added another Florida native with big college experience to the roster when Alfred Peterson was assigned to the team by the league office. The 6'3" 255lb 4 year starter finished his career at Rutgers with 142 tackles and 9.5 sacks in 43 games.
"He's another one of those Florida guys that we think can jump right in and contribute" said Firecats Coach Kevin Bouis.
The Miami Florida native played at Carol City High School where he registered 94 tackles his senior year to go along with 28 sacks. The All-State recognized player was also a standout basketball player as well. Peterson went on to make an immediate impact for the Scarlet Knights leading all linemen in tackles while receiving Freshman All- American and BIG EAST All-Freshman honors.
"Defense isn't all that prevalent in the arena game but it's a big part of what we do here, so a guy who can get after the quarterback like Peterson can is a big asset," Bouis went on to say. "The game is all about timing and anytime you can disrupt that, you increase your chances to make big plays"
Despite playing his college ball on the defensive line, the Firecats plan to use Peterson as a FB/LB. FB/LB Chris Morant, who was used primarily on the defensive side of the ball and had knack finding his way into the backfield, is playing with the AFL's Kansas City Brigade and that has left a void at the position that the coaching staff is expecting Alfred to fill adequately.
"He's just an explosive player with a motor that doesn't quit that we're excited to have," said the coach. "You can never have enough defense."
The Firecats open the season on the road against the defending Cup Champion Memphis Xplorers April 8th. The Firecats will host the Xplorers Saturday April 22nd in their home opener. 2006 season tickets are on sale now! Call (239) 390-2287 today to reserve your seats.
