Rochester Raiders News Release
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (January 28, 2008)- Kenton Johnson, an offensive lineman for the Rochester Raiders last season was drafted over the weekend by Team Michigan of the All-American Football League (AAFL). Johnson who played at Georgia Tech, began last season with the Raiders before moving up to play in NFL Europe, then returned to Rochester to finish the season. He was scheduled to return to the Raiders for the 2008 season before getting drafted on Saturday afternoon. Johnson is the second player for Rochester to move up to a higher level of football in the past two years, joining Rob Schroeder of the AFL, who was named to the AFL All-Rookie Team last season, who played for Rochester in 2006. Other notable players that were drafted over the weekend to the AAFL were former Nebraska quaterback and heisman winner Eric Crouch, along with former Florida Gator quarterback Chris Leak.
"This is a great opportunity for Kenton," commented Raiders owner Bob Bartosiewicz, "He is an amazing player and played a huge role last year for us in the championship game. We hate to see a player of his caliber leave our team, but we are very happy for him. Our goal as an organization is to have our guys move up to the next level. We wish him the best of luck and hope that he is very successful at the next level and in his career."
The All American Football League, scheduled to begin play in April 2008, is an outdoor professional American football league in which all players must possess a four-year university degree. The players will be employees of the AAFL rather than of the franchises. For its first season, the AAFL has six franchises (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Michigan, Tennessee, and Texas). Although there is no indication that nicknames would never be used, due to fans' reactions as of January 1, 2008, the teams continue to be referred to as "Team Florida", "Team Texas", etc. More information can be found by visiting the AAFL website at www.allamericanfootballleague.com.
