Terre Haute Rex News Release
TERRE HAUTE, IN - Columbia State catcher and former REX Brett Teschner signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers this past Monday, and has been assigned to the team's Rookie League affiliate Arizona League Rangers.
Teschner, who caught for the REX in the summers of 2011 and 2012, finished his tenure at Columbia State this May with an impressive senior season. In 52 games for the Cougars, the right-handed backstop racked up 74 hits, including 18 doubles and 6 homeruns, on his way to a .333 batting average and 54 runs batted in.
Though expected to be selected in the First-Year player draft this past June, the date came and went without receiving the momentous phone call. However, after an injury to catcher Fernando Vivlili of Single-A Spokane opened a spot in the organization, Teschner was the Rangers' first choice to fill the void following the roster shifts.
According to his father Steve, a high school baseball coach at South Gnwinnett High School in Georgia, says that his son is thrilled to be given the opportunity.
"He's extremely excited," the elder Teschner says. "His time with the REX was a tremendous experience, and played a huge role in his development as a player. We are forever grateful for the whole crew; Brian, Casey, etc."
Brett left for Arizona on Tuesday, and upon passing his physical was activated Thursday afternoon. Teschner's signing makes him the eighth REX alum to turn professional this month thus far.
