Atlanta Silverbacks News Release
Former Parkview soccer star and U.S. National Team hero Josh Wolff returns to Atlanta when his Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer take on the Atlanta Silverbacks in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup. The match is scheduled to kickoff on Tuesday, July 20 at DeKalb Memorial Stadium at 7:45 p.m.
Wolff captained the Parkview H.S. boys' soccer team to two state titles his junior and senior seasons, earning Team MVP, All-County and All-State honors, and was named Georgia state Player-of-the-Year in 1994.
Wolff has seen action in 25 matches for the U.S. National Team, scoring seven goals. He made two appearances with the U.S. at the 2002 World Cup in Korea/Japan, where he assisted on Brian McBride's game-winning goal to propel the U.S. into the Quarterfinals of the World Cup. Wolff helped the U.S. capture its second CONCACAF Gold Cup title when he scored the winning goal against. Costa Rica on February 2, 2002 in the U.S.' 2-0 win. He played every minute of the U.S.' six Olympic matches in Sydney and scored two goals which culminated in a historic fourth place finish, the best ever for the U.S.
The Stone Mountain-native has had a successful career in Major League Soccer, despite being hampered by injuries. Thus far in 2004, Wolff has logged five goals and five assists for 15 points in 14 games, helping Kansas City to second place in the MLS standings with a record of 8-4-4. Wolff has been selected for the 2004 MLS All-Star Game on July 31 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.
He began his professional career with the Chicago Fire in 1998. Before suffering through ACL injury in 1999 that kept him sidelined for six months, Wolff appeared in 28 consecutive matches, scoring 10 goals and two assists for 22 points. In 2001 suffered a stress fracture which kept him off the field for nearly the entire season. He started in 14 games for the Fire in 2002, scoring five goals and five assists for 15 points before he tore his right ACL. Chicago traded Wolff before the 2003 season to Kansas City. He played in 13 matches, including nine starts. He recorded two goals and one assist before he injured his hamstring and had to sit out five games. He would return to action in 2003, but his season was interrupted several more times due to a torn meniscus in his right knee, an ankle injury and a fractured rib.
