Former Oklahoma City Standout A.J. Haglund Named af2's Top Kicker of All-Time

March 2, 2009 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - The arenafootball2 league (af2) announced today that K A.J. HAGLUND has been named the league's top kicker of all-time, as selected by a group of af2 head coaches past and present, members of the media and fans throughout the country. Haglund's career was as quick as it was impressive. He set records in both the 2006 regular season and postseason - the only full season he spent in the af2. The 2006 af2 Kicker of the Year and 2008 AFL Kicker of the Year still owns the af2 record for career extra point accuracy (90.9 percent) and co-owns the af2 record for the longest field goal ever made in postseason play (57 yards).

"A.J. had an outstanding af2 career," said af2 President Jerry Kurz. "He had a strong leg and was nearly automatic on extra points. The experience he gained by playing in our league helped propel him to even greater success in the AFL."

A.J. Haglund at a glance

Haglund joined Oklahoma City for the team's last five regular season games of 2005 and kicked well, hitting 4-of-7 field goals and 34-of-41 extra points. In 2006, he was nearly perfect. Haglund racked up a league-high 146 points during the regular season, the third-highest single season point total for a kicker in af2 history. He also had the best season for point after accuracy in af2 history, converting on 116-of-124 extra points (93.5 percent). That year Haglund connected on an astounding 69 consecutive PATs over a stretch that lasted eight games. During the postseason, Haglund's lone field goal make was an af2 playoff record-setting 57-yard kick. His 2006 season was capped off by earning a spot on the National Conference All-af2 First Team as well as being honored as the league's Kicker of the Year. The Central Oklahoma alum finished his career as the league's all-time leader in extra point accuracy (90.9 percent; 150-of-165). After his strong showing in 2006, Haglund signed with the AFL's San Jose SaberCats. In his first AFL season (2007), he established single-season records for PATs made and attempted and was named to the All-Rookie Team. He also earned All-Arena Second Team honors. He was even better in 2008, being named the AFL Kicker of the Year. Haglund, who earned All-Arena First Team honors as well, led all kickers in scoring (179 points), connecting on 21-of-25 (84.0 percent) field goals and converting 116-of-124 extra points.
