Port Huron Icehawks News Release
PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks announced that veteran defenseman Kevin Hansen has signed a two-year deal to join the Icehawks roster. Per team policy, details were not released.
Hansen (6-1, 210 lbs) is entering his ninth professional season. A member of the Fort Wayne Komets team that won the Turner Cup in 2008, he returns to the International Hockey League after skating with the Tulsa Oilers in the Central Hockey League last season. The defenseman netted 20 points (4g, 16a) and 164 penalty minutes in 58 games with Tulsa.
"It is an amazing opportunity for me to join a great team and for myself and my family to be closer to home," said Hansen, whose wife is from Michigan. "Coach Drulia always puts a great team on the ice. Hopefully I can be a small piece of the puzzle and we can bring home the championship that the fans and the city deserve. It is a great league and I am looking forward to getting back."
The 31-year old native of Hamburg, New York skated with the Fort Wayne Komets for two seasons (2006-08) and averaged 12 points and 150 penalty minutes per year as the Komets won back-to-back regular season championships. In the 2007-08 season, he had one goal and 11 assists in the regular season. He was also an integral part of a playoff run that saw the Komets defeat the Icehawks in triple overtime of game seven to win the championship. He finished the playoffs with one assist and a +5 rating in 13 games.
Hansen has played with numerous teams in the Central Hockey League, East Coast Hockey League and the United Hockey League during his career, including a two-year stint with the Motor City Mechanics from 2004-06.
"We are extremely happy to add someone with Kevin's experience and leadership," Head Coach and General Manager Stan Drulia said. "He is a physical player who can also put points on the board. He knows what it takes to win a championship and will be a big part of our quest to bring the Turner Cup to Port Huron."
