Fargo-Moorhead Jets News Release
(Fargo, ND) In a wild weekend of college hockey it was the former Jets who rose above the rest to claim conference title and playoff births.
In Atlantic Hockey it was Brent Olson burying two goals in a 5-0 win over RIT to send the Air Force Falcons into the title game against Jesse Echternach and Mercyhurst who beat Army 4-2. With the game tied at 4-4 and in the second overtime Olson found his line mate Josh Frider for the game-winner. Prior to that goal Olson scored and assisted on Frider's game tying goal to send it into the extra sessions. Air Force claims the automatic bid into the field of 16.
Off highway 169 in southern Minnesota, Trevor Bruess and his Mavericks welcomed the Golden Gophers with open ice hits and eye-popping saves for a 1-0 double overtime win to take game one in the WCHA playoffs. Bruess bagged the game winner short-handed with under three minutes to play in the second extra frame. Saturday night the Gophers evened the series at 1-1 with another overtime game. This, however, set the table for game three and the stage wouldn't get any bigger. Trailing 2-1 heading into the third, Bruess chipped the puck from the left corner out to a streaking Kael Mouillierat to send the game to another eventual overtime. After no success by either team it was only fitting for another 20 minutes would be proper. The Gophers got a weak goal off the body of a Maverick sending them to the Final Five in St. Paul.
East Lansing was the site for Phil Fox and the Northern Michigan Wildcats against the defending national champion Michigan State Spartans. Though MSU won the first game 5-1, the Wildcats would remain poised to get game two 2-1 setting up the pivotal game three. In the series finale and a trip to the Joe on the line it Fox who netted a goal while the game went into overtime tied, 2-2. On the power-play Matt Butcher sealed the victory 3-2. With the win, Northern Michigan earned another shot at Michigan whom they tied twice in their last meetings.
