
Former Gull Tommy Edman Makes MLB Debut

NEWPORT, R.I. - FormerNewport Gull Tommy Edman made his Major League debut on Saturday, June 8thagainst the Chicago Cubs. The switch-hitting infielder pinch hit for RyanHelsley in the top of the ninth, striking out in his only plate appearance.
Edman was a key part inNewport's 2014 championship team, finishing the summer with a .309 average with15 doubles and 20 RBI. Edman's .319 average and ten stolen bases made him oneof the premier names in the NECBL for the 2014 season, and he earned a spot onthe South All-Star team for his consistent performances.
In his three years atStanford, Edman posted a .281 career batting average with 177 hits to his name.In his junior season, he started every game at shortstop for Stanford, leadingthe team in runs, hits, triples and stolen bases. He was voted First-teamAll-Pac-12 and All-Pac-12 Defensive team. Following his stellar juniorcampaign, the St. Louis Cardinals selected Edman in the 6th round of the 2016MLB Draft.
Edman's debut makes him thesecond Gull to debut in the Majors this season and the 18th former Gull toreach the Major Leagues- the most out of all the NECBL franchises.
