Cowlitz Black Bears News Release

Longview-Kelso, Washington, Tuesday, February 8, 2011: Highly-touted Pepperdine freshman left-hander Matt Maurer has signed to pitch for the Cowlitz Black Bears this summer. Maurer, a 6' 3" 220 pound Medford, Oregon native, received Gatorade and Louisville Slugger Player of the Year honors during his career at North Medford High School. After leading his school to the Oregon State Championship in 2007, Maurer had a stellar senior season in 2010, with a 9-1 record, 99 strikeouts and a 0.78 ERA. "Matt has a chance to be a special player," said Black Bears coach Bryson LeBlanc.

The Black Bears have also signed Pepperdine relief pitcher Ricky Villareal. The sophomore from Texas pitched in 13 games for Pepperdine last spring, with a 1-1 mark and 3.95 ERA.

"We're not only excited to have Maurer and Villareal join us for the 2011 season, we're excited to build our relationship with Steve Rodriguez and Pepperdine," said Black Bears general manager Grant Wilson. "We still have more players to sign, but we feel we have the makings of an exceptional team for our second season."
