Former Ace Dowdy Earns Promotion

October 23, 2007 - United League Baseball (ULB) - Alexandria Aces News Release

Alexandria, LA; October 23, 2007- The Alexandria Aces of United League Baseball (ULB) announced today that former Aces closer Justin Dowdy has been assigned by the Oakland Athletics to the Arizona Fall League (AFL), a league normally reserved for the top prospects in a major league organization.

Dowdy, who was signed by Oakland shortly after the Aces won their second straight United League championship, reported to the Athletics Fall Instructional League in mid-September. Following a dominant performance in the Instructional League, Dowdy was assigned to the Phoenix Desert Dogs of the AFL, one of only six minor leaguers in the Oakland system selected to participate in the prestigious league. With the Desert Dogs, Dowdy has appeared in 1 game, striking out 2 with a 0.00 ERA.

"I feel great," Dowdy said. "I feel like all the hard work is paying off. But I know I'm not there yet. I still have a lot of work to do."

The next step for Dowdy is an invitation to Major League Spring Training, although he expects to open the season in Class AA. "They told me it was possible if I pitch well here, I could be in Oakland by the end of the season," Dowdy said. "That would be awesome."

A left-handed pitcher from San Diego, CA, Dowdy set a ULB record for saves in a season in 2007 with 24. He ended the season with a 2-3 record and a 1.37 ERA. In 48 appearances, Dowdy threw 52.2 innings, striking out 102 while walking only 22. In a season plus with the Aces Dowdy compiled 31 saves and a 5-3 record in 72.2 innings.

United League Baseball is an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas and Louisiana. The United League is preparing for its third season this summer with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Laredo, Harlingen, and San Angelo, Texas; and Alexandria, Louisiana.
