New England Riptide News Release

Twelve strikeouts by Jocelyn Forest helped the New England Riptide earn a victory over the Texas Thunder in game one of the four game series. The Riptide shut out the Thunder 2-0.

Game one began as a pitchers duel with New England's Jocelyn Forest battling the Thunder's Serena Settlemier. Settlemier silenced the Riptide at the plate through the bottom of the third, facing only three batters in the first and third and four in the second. Forest was equally as tough for the Riptide in the circle facing only three batters an inning through the third while earning five strikeouts.

Rocky Spencer was the first to get to Forest for a hit in the top of the fourth with two outs but was stranded on base as Jackie Pasquerella caught a foul off the bat of Karrie Rider to end the inning.

New England finally put an end to the scoreless deadlock, cracking Settelmeir and breaking through the Thunder defense in the bottom of the fourth. Lyndsey Angus stepped to the plate with one out and broke through Settelmeir?s no hitter singling to left field. Designated player Tarrah Beyster grounded out to Clare Burnum at third advancing Angus. The Riptide rallied with two outs in the inning putting two runs on the board. KJ Kelley singled scoring Angus to put the Riptide on top 1-0. Kristin Vesely was next to the plate sending a base hit into centerfield putting two runners on for New England. A strong double down the left field line by Lisa Iancin scored Kelley giving the Riptide a 2-0 advantage. Settlemier handed Jen Scavone a walk to load the bases but redeemed herself striking out Destiny Frankenstein to end the inning.

The Riptide defense remained strong behind Forest in the circle throughout the remainder of the game holding the Thunder scoreless. Forest quieted the Texas offense allowing only three hits and earning twelve strikeouts on her way to a league leading fifteenth pitching victory.

The 'Tide are back on Martin Softball Field tomorrow, Thursday August 17 at 7:05 pm for game two with the Texas Thunder.
