(Newark, N.J., Jul. 13, 2010) - Former Met All-Star Edgardo Alfonzo, just reinstated to the roster before the game, came through with two hits and a key RBI single, leading the Newark Bears to a 4-1 victory over the Bridgeport Bluefish Tuesday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
Alfonzo was on the team's inactive list, but was activated to start the game for the Bears at third base. He singled in his first at-bat, but delivered a clutch run-scoring single in the sixth inning, highlighting a two-run rally for the Bears. The game, which started at 11:05 a.m., featured a two-hour, 18 minute rain delay in the top of the fourth inning.
Ryan Glynn, who entered the game for Bears' starter Kelvin Villa after the lengthy delay, pitched three innings of one-hit baseball, striking out four to earn his first win of the season in just his second appearance. Glynn was the second of five Newark pitchers, with Michael Nix retiring the Bluefish in the ninth to earn his fourth save.
The Bluefish drew first blood in the top of the first, when Brandon Chaves and Steve Moss had consecutive doubles off Villa. The Bears, who improved to 3-2 in the second half of the Atlantic League season, took the lead in the bottom of the third inning off Bridgeport starter Kevin Mannix (8-4). With two out, Kennard Jones reached on an infield single that was lined off the back of Mannix and then Daryle Ward walked. Carl Everett drove in the first run with an RBI single up the middle to score Jones and Brian Barton brought home the second run on a single to center, but Everett was thrown out at the plate to end the inning, with the Bears holding a 2-1 lead.
The rain came down soon after and the delay ended the day of both starting pitchers. Newark scored two more runs off reliever Luis Arroyo in the sixth. Barton walked and Manny Mejia singled. Alfonzo then followed with a single to right to score Barton and Gabe Suarez followed with an RBI single of his own, pushing the lead to 4-1. The Bears' bullpen then shut the door, as Glynn, Vince Perkins, Greg Reinhard and Nix all combined to keep Bridgeport off the scoreboard. For the Bears, Alfonzo and Jones had two hits each.
The Bears and 'Fish battle in the second game of the midweek series on Wednesday night. Game time is set for 6:35 p.m., with the gates of Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium opening at 5:35 p.m. Newark continues the "Kids Eat Free" Wednesdays promotion, presented by Dr. Thomas Haveron. Kids 12 and under with a paid adult get to eat for free throughout the night. Free food and good baseball makes kids happy.
