Fondy's Hat Trick Leads Louisville To Historic Win
June 27, 2015 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Louisville City FC News Release
Louisville, KY - In a wild match on Saturday night, Louisville City (6-3-5, 23 points) trounced a formidable OKC Energy (7-4-3, 24 points) squad 6-2, in a physical, card-filled interconfernce affair in front of 6,646 fans at Louisville Slugger Field.
OKC opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Sebastian Dalgaard capitalized on an early counter attack, marking the third consecutive game in which Louisville conceded first.
Louisville would answer in kind, with considerable pressure that eventually led to the equalizer.
With Louisville racing upfield, an OKC defender nervously reached out with his foot and tapped the ball back to keeper Evan Newton. When Newton claimed it with his hands, referee Tony Crush whistled the visitors for an illegal back pass and awarded Lou City with a rare indirect free kick inside the box in the 27th minute. The ensuing kick was slid across face of goal to Magnus Rasmussen who smashed his chance into the roof of the net, ending Louisville's 340+ minute scoring drought in unusual fashion.
Twelve minutes later, Louisville doubled its lead and Rasmussen was central to the action. After making a run towards the OKC box, the Dane spotted captain Matt Fondy who fired the ball home with his weaker left foot. The goal matched Louisville's previous scoring output for the month of March.
Louisville led at the half, 2-1.
The visitors answered themselves early in the second half. Crush called Louisville City's Tarek Morad for a foul in the box, and awarded a penalty to OKC. Danni Konig took the ensuing penalty well, and brought the match back on level terms, though it wouldn't be the last penalty of the match.
Then the floodgates opened, as Louisville scored three goals in eleven minutes.
Louisville took advantage of an OKC turnover when Enrique Montano picked the ball up just outside the OKC box and sent in a cross to the near post which Fondy redirected to the far side past Newton.
Then Louisville found themselves on the other side of a referee's decision when Fondy was taken down in the box, setting up a Magnus Rasmussen penalty. Louisville's number 10 sent the keeper in the wrong direction and made it 4-2.
The third goal in the outpouring came from midfielder Kadeem Dacres in the 67th minute when the Rosedale, New York native found space in the box as Rasmussen fought off multiple defenders to feed him the ball. Dacres did well to avoid the oncoming tackle to send in a low shot that snuck inside the far post.
Fans who were expecting Fondy to complete his hat trick from the penalty spot earlier in the match may have been disappointed momentarily, but Fondy would put an exclamation point on his evening in the 87th minute. Bryan Burke snuck in behind a defender to the endline, and set up Fondy who again scored with his left foot to complete the first hat trick of his career and the first in Louisville City history, making it 6-2.
In a physical affair, OKC was shown three yellow cards as well as a red, to one yellow for Louisville.
The victory snaps a three match losing streak for City. The Louisvillians will take on the Richmond Kickers next Saturday in a rematch of a 1-1 draw at Richmond on April 11th. Kick off will be at 7:30 p.m. at Louisville Slugger Field and fans can get tickets for the much anticipated July 4th match at louisvillecityfc.com/tickets.
