Roughnecks Beaten 4-2 by Galaxy II
June 27, 2015 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
FC Tulsa News Release
It was a familiar scenario for the Tulsa Roughnecks Saturday night at ONEOK Field in a meeting with Los Angeles Galaxy II. The Roughnecks produced a number of good scoring chances but fell victim to a second-half brace from USA U-20 National Team member Bradford Jamieson as Galaxy II recorded a 4-2 win in downtown Tulsa before a crowd of 5,275.
The Roughnecks out-shot the Galaxy 19-11 in the match but produced only one goal in the run of play.
The contest was even at halftime with each side getting a goal in the first 45 minutes. Tulsa fell into an early hole when only four minutes into the game, Raul Mendiola slipped behind his defender and chipped over a sliding Zac Lubin to put Los Dos up 1-0.
An apparent goal from Cristian Mata in the 9th minute was waved off by an offsides call, but four minutes later the Roughnecks got the equalizer. Iarfhlaith Davoren's right-footed shot beat keeper Clement Diop to even the score at 1-1.
Davoren was a constant threat down the left flank the entire first half. He set Mata up twice in a period of four minutes. Mata's header in the 19th minute was saved by Diop as was his left-footed shot four minutes later.
Brady Ballew and Davoren had long-distance efforts turned away from Diop as well later in the half.
One of the key sequences of the first half occurred in the final minute. Sammy Ochoa failed to find the frame on an open header for Tulsa at one end, while Davoren and Lubin combined to block a dangerous shot from Jamieson at the other end.
It would be the final contribution for Davoren who had one of his best halves of the season. He was injured on the play and was subbed out for Adam Black to start the second 45 minutes.
Three minutes after the break, Mata nearly put the Roughnecks ahead when he got behind the Los Dos defense. His chip beat Diop but sailed just over the crossbar.
Diop, who registered seven saves in the match, turned away a blast from Ochoa and a header from Steven Miller before Jamieson produced a pair of goals only four minutes apart.
Both goals were similar with Jamieson placing right-footed shots past Lubin from just inside the box. It was a good comeback for the Los Dos forward who suffered a concussion in the U-20 World Cup in New Zealand earlier this month.
In remained a 3-1 game until the 83rd minute. Ballew was taken down from behind inside the penalty area, resulting in Tulsa's second penalty kick of the season. Substitute Gibson Bardsley sent Diop the wrong way and rolled his shot into the lower right corner of the goal to pull the Roughnecks to within one.
Any hopes of a comeback were dashed three minutes later. Roughnecks' defender Ben Brewster tried to deliver a header back to Lubin, but a Galaxy attacker arrived at the ball at the same time as the keeper. Lubin was taken out on the play, leaving a wide open net for Ariel Lassister. Lassiter delivered the fourth goal of the night for Los Dos.
The defeat leaves Tulsa with 15 points after 15 matches with a 4-8-3 record.
The Roughnecks will now get nearly two weeks off before their next match. Tulsa will host Orange County Blues on Thursday, July 9 at ONEOK Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30PM.
