Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - Despite scoring the game's final five runs, Newport (16-10) fell to Mystic (13-12) 11-7 in a game called after six innings due to fog, putting an end to a valiant comeback attempt.

Mystic jumped on the board right away with a pair of runs in both the first and second inning. But the Gulls added a pair themselves in their half of the third after Matt Wood set the table with a double, and Bryce Hulett connected on an RBI single. Newport added one more in the frame on a long sacrifice fly to right field from Joe Fortin.

But the main comeback attempted after Mystic plated seven in the top of the fourth highlighted by an Addison Kopack triple and Jimmy Sullivan home run in back-to-back at bats.

From there, the rally was on. Four Gulls runs scored in the bottom of the fifth. A ground rule double from Kenny Oyama led things off. He was followed later that inning by three straight singles from Wood, Hulett and Fortin. A Jordon Rogers fielder's choice scored Newport's sixth run of the night.

Wood, who shined with a 3-4 night, doubled again one inning later to score Newport's final run and make it 11-7 in the sixth. One pitch into the top of the seventh, the conditions were deemed unplayable.

Tomorrow, the Gulls play their third doubleheader of the summer against the Danbury Westerners (11-11). First pitch from Rogers Park for game one is at 4:00pm.

The Gulls return to Cardines Field on Friday to face Danbury again for Mark Weed Scholarship Legacy Night. Gates open at 5, first pitch 6:35 p.m.
