Schaumburg Flyers News Release
SCHAUMBRUG, IL-Seven stolen bases by the Flyers helped them beat the Kansas City T-Bones 6-3 at Alexian Field Friday night in front of 4.978 fans.
A solo home run by Richard Mercado got the scoring started in the second for the Flyers, and they weren't done yet. After Lyndon Poole reached on a bunt single, he advanced to second on a stolen base. A wild pitch by T-Bones starter Ryan Knippschild put Poole on third, and Tony Mansolino followed with an RBI sacrifice fly, giving the Flyers a 2-0 lead.
The scoring continued for the Flyers in the fourth. Poole reached base once again with a leadoff walk, and two stolen bases later, he found himself at third, ready to score. Second basemen TJ Wilson delivered an RBI sac fly, scoring Poole for a 3-0 lead. An RBI single by Travis Brown followed, and gave the Flyers a 4-0 cushion in the fourth.
The T-Bones tried to get back into the game in the fifth. After a Jim Fasano single led off the inning, Ryan Fox clubbed a two-run home run over the left field wall to cut the lead in half at 4-2.
In the Flyers half of the fifth, Victor Ferrante got aboard with a leadoff walk. After a Felix Jose fly out, Mercado was at the plate. A wild pitch by Knippschild moved Ferrante all the way to third, and Knippschild wasn't done there. Fox couldn't get in front of a ball that bounced in front of the plate, and another wild pitch scored Ferrante, making it 5-2 Flyers.
The T-Bones got their last run in the eighth with a solo home run from Damian Rolls. After striking out right fielder Greg Jacobs, Jim Popp entered the game for Flyers starter Alain Quijano.
The bottom half of the eighth is where the Flyers would score their final run. After a two-out Mansolino single, Mansolino stole second and kept going to third on another wild pitch. With Wilson at the plate, an error by first basemen Fasano allowed Mansolino to score, giving the Flyers a three run lead heading to the ninth.
Quijano gave up three earned runs in seven strong innings, allowing eight hits, two walks and recording eight strikeouts in the win. It moves Quijano to 4-5 on the season.
Knippschild got the loss, dropping him to 3-6 on the season. The left-hander went six innings, striking out and walking four.
The seven stole bases on the night were the most by the Flyers this season, crushing their previous high mark of three, set on July 14th vs. Winnipeg
The Flyers now stand at 35-46 on the season, while the T-Bones record falls to 35-45, still holding onto that fourth and final playoff spot by just a half game.
The series continues tomorrow night at Alexian Field where RHP Ed Almonte (5-9, 4.85) takes the bump for the Flyers, while RHP Duston Bolton (4-5, 5.97) gets the call for the T-Bones. First pitch is at 6:05.
