Flyers pick up 12th win of season
June 3, 2006 - Northern League (NL)
Schaumburg Flyers News Release
Center fielder Eric Cole seemed to do everything tonight, leading the Flyers in their 9-6 back and fourth win over the visiting Gary Southshore Railcats. Cole went 2-4 from the plate, with three RBI and one run scored. With the win the Flyers continue their best showing to date, moving to 12-3. The Railcats fall to 4-12.
Cole got things started for the Flyers in the first inning when he drove in Geoff McCallum from second on a double hit over the left fielder's head, taking the early 1-0 lead. McCallum then crossed the plate when designated hitter Chris Weekly singled to the infield and reached second when the second baseman launched the ball over the first baseman's head. Ben Van Iderstine pushed the Flyers early lead to 3-0 when he brought in Weekly on a double hit down the right field line.
The Railcats picked up their first two runs in the second, when Chris Curry crossed the plate when Alex Taylor successfully reached on a fielder's choice. Eric McNamee grounded out to bring in Steve Booth to shrink the Flyer's lead to only one run. Taylor then scored when a wild pitch thrown all the way to the backstop, knotting things up at three-all.
Second baseman Rob Watson re-took the Flyers lead when he drove in left fielder Nelson Gord on a two run rocket sent over the left field fence, his second homer on the season, taking the 5-3 lead in the bottom of the second.
Railcats second baseman Eric McNamee shrunk the Flyers lead to only one run in the fifth when he scored off of a double hit down the left field line by shortstop Jay Pecci. The Flyers were able to get out of the inning with minimal damage.
The Railcats tied things up, again, in the sixth, 5-5, when catcher Chris Curry walked and was then brought in when McNamee sacrificed to the outfield.
The Railcats took the 6-5 lead in the seventh, when Curry hit a ground rule double to bring in center fielder Jermaine Allensworth who scored from third. Flyers reliever Matt Schweitzer was able to get out of the inning, striking out the next batter.
The Flyers regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh, when Eric Cole singled with the bases loaded to bring in McCallum and Watson. The Flyers ended the inning with the one run, 7-6, lead.
The Flyers took an insurance run in the eighth when catcher Ryan Walker scored on a fielder's choice hit by McCallum. McCallum then scored from third on a wild pitch, taking the 9-6 lead before the Railcats were able to get out of the inning.
Schaumburg reliever Nate Cotton finished things up in the ninth, picking up his seventh save for the season. Matt Schweitzer picks up his third win on the season coming out of the Schaumburg bullpen. Jeremy Schmidt received the loss for the Railcats.
The Flyers and the Railcats will finish their three game series tomorrow at 12:05 at as the ballpark celebrates Family Day sponsored by Roosevelt University.
