Flyers off to best start in franchise history

June 1, 2006 - Northern League (NL)
Schaumburg Flyers News Release

After 13 games, the Schaumburg Flyers baseball team has posted their best start in franchise history. With an 11-2 record, the Flyers are off to a better start than in 2004 when they made it all the way to the Northern League Championship Series against the Saint Paul Saints, that year the flyers were 9-4 after 13 games.

A big part of the Flyers success has been the stellar performance of their bullpen. The Flyers bullpen has yet to give up a run this season. As a group, they have allowed only 19 hits, while registering nine saves and four wins, and striking out 33 batters in 39.2 innings of work. Reliever Nate Cotton, in six appearances, has picked up six of those nine saves and allowed only two hits while striking out seven and giving up only one walk.

As a staff, the Flyers pitchers have a cumulative ERA of 3.05. Opponents facing the Flyers have a lowly .217 batting average and have struck out 80 times. The Flyers hold four of the top ten spots in individual pitching for the Northern League. Outfielder Eric Cole and second baseman Rob Watson lead the team in most hitting categories, Cole is currently leading the team with a .360 batting average, three homeruns and 11 RBI. Watson is second in batting average with .353 and is tied and is tied with Cole to lead the team in hits with 18. Cole and Watson sit sixth and ninth in the Northern League top ten in batting respectively.

In 13 games so far this season, the Flyers have out- scored opponents 63-42 and out-hit opponents 119- 89. As a team, the Flyers are batting .275 with a .405 slugging percentage and a .336 on base percentage. The Flyers lead the Northern League in hits and are ranked third in team batting and team pitching.

The Flyers return to the friendly confines of Alexian Field tomorrow for a three game home series against the Gary Southshore Railcats. This will be the second series for the two teams in as many weeks, with the Flyers taking the first series 2-1 in Gary, Ind.

Game time is set for 7:05 Friday night. The first 2500 fans through the gate on Friday will receive a logo baseball courtesy of Midwest Bank.
