SCHAUMBURG, IL- The Schaumburg Flyers and Joliet JackHammers met for the first time in regular season play, ending with a 9-7 win for Schaumburg on Monday night. Closing their longest losing streak of the 2002 season at five, the Flyers improved to 13-16, which evened their record with Joliet's. Both squads concluded the night 4.5 games back in the Northern League-Central's South Division.

The Flyers used the power of the home run to maintain leads throughout the game. With the Flyers ahead 1-0 in the second inning, DH Eric Goerdt parked a solo home run into the leftfield bleachers for a 2-0 edge. The JackHammers struck back in the third inning with a solo shot by LF Trey Beamon and an RBI double by 1B Rick Wilkins. Schaumburg broke the game open off of Joliet LHP Brian Mazone (4-2) in the fourth inning, as RF Derek Kopacz (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 Runs Scored) struck a triple to right centerfield, scoring 2B Ender Gonzalez. 1B Craig Dour came up to the plate next and lifted a two-run blast in the bleachers for his second home run of the season, and a 5-2 Schaumburg lead. C Luis Melendez added an RBI double and LF Chris Powell contributed a run-scoring single which scored Melendez, making the score 7-2 after four innings.

Joliet closed the gap from 9-2, with three runs in the eighth, and continued the threat with a two-run double to right centerfield by Wilkins. With the bases loaded and two outs, Flyers RHP Dusty Keppen struck out JackHammers CF Chad Henry in the ninth inning to secure the victory for Schaumburg (Save #6). LHP Mike Chaney pitched 7.1 innings and fanned five batters for the win (3-2).

The Flyers continue a four-game set with the Joliet JackHammers Tuesday at Alexian Field. The Flyers will start RHP Todd Genke (1-2, 7.71). Joliet offers RHP Kevin Orga (2-0, 2.55) (Game Time: 7:20 PM-WONC 89.1 FM).
