
Flyers hand Jackhammers 8-4 loss

SCHAUMBURG, IL-The Schaumburg Flyers (2-3) scored seven runs in the fourth inning to beat the Joliet JackHammers 8-4 before 1,370 fans at ALEXIAN FIELD on Monday Night.
Joliet pushed across a single run in the second inning against Schaumburg starting pitcher Doug Brooks (1-0). Juan Diaz (1-4) led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. He moved to second base on a single by Wally Backman, Jr. (1-4)
Nick Prosise (2-4) lined a single into center field to score Diaz and give Joliet a 1-0 lead.
The JackHammers scored one run in the second inning when Steve Garrabrants (1-3) led off the inning by reaching base on an error by center fielder Dustin Matthews. Matthews dropped a fly ball and Garrabrants ended up at third base. Nick McIntyre (2-4) hit an RBI single to score Garrabrants and give Joliet a 2-0 lead.
The Flyers scored seven runs in the fourth inning against JackHammers starter Mike Schellinger (0-1). Ryan Luther (3-4) hit a one-out single and stole second base. Bo Hart (1-3) hit an RBI single to score Luther and cut the JackHammers lead down to 2-1.
Peanut Williams (2-4) hit a double to score Hart and tie the game at 2-2. Vince Harrison (2-3) hit a triple to score Williams and make it 3-2.
Dustin Matthews (1-3) hit a three-run home run to cap off the scoring and give the Flyers a 7-2 lead.
Joliet tried it's best to chip away at the Schaumburg lead. Garrabrants walked to lead off the fifth inning and scored on a double by McIntyre. The JackHammers trailed the Flyers 8-3.
Schaumburg scored one more run in the fifth inning against Joliet left-handed reliever Dustin Taylor. The JackHammers scored another run in the seventh inning. Eric Scriven (0-3) was hit by a pitch and stole second base. Garrabrants followed with a walk. Both runners advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch by Flyers reliever David Byard.
McIntyre hit a sacrifice fly to score Scriven and get the JackHammers within four runs at 8-4.
Loose Gravel: Taylor made the longest relief appearance for the JackHammers thus far in 2008. He pitched four and one-thirds innings and allowed one run on three hits. The previous high was two and two-thirds innings by Tyler Meigs on May 16 in Gary.
Tuesday night the JackHammers and Flyers battle in game of their series. RHP Nate Sevier (1-0, 0.00) will make his second start of the season for Joliet. He will face Schaumburg RHP Brian Finch (0-0, 1.29). The first pitch is at 6:20 p.m. and pre-game coverage begins at 6:05 p.m. on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com.
