Schaumburg Flyers News Release
Gary, IN- Five errors by the Gary Southshore RailCats (18-6) couldn't give the Schaumburg Flyers (11-13) the victory in the first game of the three-game series, falling 5-4. The Flyers and Railcats both stumbled to start. After a pair of 1-out singles from both teams in the first inning, neither team was able to score runners on second and third base.
Getting on the scoreboard first were the Flyers, scoring all four of their runs in the second inning. RailCats starter Jason Shelley (1-1) gave up three consecutive walks to start the inning. With one out, Flyers second baseman Demetrius Heath hit a 2-run single to center, and moved to second on an error by RailCats centerfielder Dale Mueller. Left fielder Christian Snavely stepped in and hit a 2-run single to extend his team lead in RBI with 19, and gave the Flyers a 4-0 lead. Snavely also extended his on-base streak to a 24th game, going 1-for-5 on the night.
The RailCats got to Flyers left-handed starter Drew Dickinson (2-3) in the 5th inning, as all nine hitters stepped into the batter's box. After Dickinson got a double play, he got into some major trouble. He gave four consecutive hits, including a 2-run game-tying double by Gary catcher Jose Yepez. Dickinson was taken out of the game after giving up that double. Eiji Yano entered and gave up the eventual game-winning RBI single to Gary third baseman Tanner Townsend.
The Flyers were unable to get a runner past second base after that 5-run fifth inning by the RailCats. In fact, they earned just one hit in the four innings that followed, leaving two men on base. The loss moves the Flyers to 7 games behind Gary in the South Division of the Northern League.
On Wednesday night, it will be a battle of the aces, as the Flyers send Ryan Harris (1-2, 7.06 ERA) to counter the RailCats' Willie Glen (3-0, 3.82 ERA) in game two of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm.
The Schaumburg Flyers return to Alexian Field on Tuesday, June 19, to face the Joliet Jackhammers at 7:05pm. The first 1,500 kids (ages 14 and under) entering the gates will receive a Flyers Youth Cap, courtesy of Applebee's. To get your tickets for this game or any other game on the 9-game home stand from June 19 through June 28, visit the Alexian Field box office or purchase your tickets online at www.flyersbaseball.com
