Flyers Acquire Newbury from Rangers for Syvret

July 2, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release

The Philadelphia Flyers have announced that they have acquired 31-year-old forward Kris Newbury from the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Danny Syvret in a trade of veteran leaders at the AHL level.

Newbury arrives to the Flyers organization as a proven goal scorer and point producer at the AHL level. Since his debut season in 2003-04, he has appeared in 599 career AHL games scoring 142 goals with 297 assists for 439 points while accumulating 1,332 penalty minutes. He has also played in 72 career NHL games with the Rangers, Detroit and Toronto scoring four goals and five assists.

Newbury was acquired by the Rangers in March, 2010 and spent the next three full seasons in their organization playing 222 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack / Connecticut Whale scoring 66 goals and 139 assists for 205 points while also appearing in 24 NHL games for the Blue-Shirts recording two assists.

Newbury has recorded 60 or more points in each of the last three seasons in the AHL and four times total in his career. Last season, he scored 20 goals and 42 assists for 62 points in 70 games with Connecticut and also played in six games with New York. In 2011-12, he scored a career-high 25 goals.

The Brampton, Ont. native was originally selected in the fifth round by the San Jose Sharks in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft and then broke in professionally as a Toronto prospect spending six seasons with the St. John's Maple Leafs and Toronto Marlies from 2003-09 while also appearing in 44 NHL games with Toronto.

Danny Syvret, 28, recorded six goals and 34 assists for 40 points for the Adirondack Phantoms in 2012-13. He was one of only two players, along with Rob Bordson, to play in all 76 games last year. Syvret was an alternate captain on the team in his fourth stint with the Flyers organization. He has appeared in 483 AHL games in his career scoring 46 goals and adding 206 assists for 252 points. In 59 career NHL appearances with the Flyers, Anaheim and Edmonton, Syvret posted three goals and four assists. His first career NHL goal came in the 2010 NHL Winter Classic at Fenway Park in Boston.

Syvret celebrated his 500th career professional game by scoring a game-winner in the fifth round of a shootout at the Binghamton Senators on January 11, 2013. It was one of three late-round clinchers for Syvret in his new role as anchor of the shootout lineup.

Hartford could be the ninth AHL city for Syvret to call home in his well-traveled career dating back to 2005-06. He has also suited up for the Hamilton Bulldogs, Grand Rapids Griffins, Springfield Falcons, Hershey Bears, Syracuse Crunch and Peoria Rivermen as well as the Philadelphia Phantoms and Adirondack Phantoms.

But Syvret has spent more of his career with the Phantoms than any other team. He has played in 218 career games with the Phantoms franchise (Adirondack and Philadelphia combined) scoring 33 goals and 112 assists for 145 points. He is 12th all-time in Phantoms franchise history in career points and rates seventh all-time in career assists. Among Adirondack Phantoms players, he is third all-time in career assists (67) and second among defensemen. He is 10th all-time in career games (142).
