Florida Seals opening training camp

Florida Seals News Release

[ROCKLEDGE, Fla.] -The off-season is almost officially over for the Florida Seals hockey team. After 18 months of planning, moving and anticipation the Seals have moved ever so closer to opening their new chapter of their legacy. Today training camp 2005 got underway at the Space Coast Iceplex.

Seals' Head Coach Tommy Stewart invited 24 players to camp and 19 reported on Thursday morning. The other five players are currently in camps of various teams in various leagues. Most are expected to report by the end of the weekend.

While some other coaches in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) have a larger group of players in camp, the 24 invitees is the average number for Stewart, now in his third year of coaching. It should be a highly competitive camp and there are many roster spots still open for the taking.

"I told the guys there are plenty of spots open on the roster," said Stewart. "Just because a guy has played for me before does not mean he is guaranteed a spot on this year's roster."

The Seals were unable to find an opponent for a preseason game, thus intra-squad games will be the even more important this preseason. Stewart said the tam will be split up for two intra-squad games taking place on Sunday and Tuesday mornings.

"It is not the worst thing to not have a preseason game," said Stewart. "It will be interesting to see how some of the players motivate themselves in these intra-squad games and show off their game skills during the two exhibitions."

All practice sessions are open to the public. The Space Coast Iceplex is located on Central Florida's beautiful east coast, just minutes from Cocoa Beach and the Kennedy Space Center. Less than one hour from Orlando and the world famous theme parks, they are located in Rockledge Florida on Roy Wall Blvd. just off Fiske Blvd. 1/4 of a mile from the Fiske Blvd. Interchange on I-95 (Exit #195). Check them out on the web at www.spacecoasticeplex.com or call them at 321-504-7500.
