Rochester Americans News Release

(Rochester, NY)... Rochester Americans General Manager Jody Gage announced today that the Florida Panthers have recalled center Shawn Matthias. The recall is Matthias' first of the season.

Matthias, 20, left Rochester Wednesday evening and may appear in tonight's National Hockey League contest against the Ottawa Senators. Faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the BankAtlantic Center.

A native of Mississauga, Ontario, Matthias skated in four games with the Panthers last season, picking up a pair of goals in his professional hockey debut. In eight American Hockey League contests with the Amerks this season, the 6-foot-4, 225-pound forward has registered a goal and an assist to go along with two penalty minutes. Originally a second-round selection (47th overall) by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Matthias was acquired by Florida in a trade in exchange for right wing Todd Bertuzzi and a second-round selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

The Amerks kickoff a season-long six-game, three-week homestand on Friday, October 31st with a Halloween night matchup against the Toronto Marlies at The Blue Cross Arena. The 7:35 p.m. North Division contest will be the first of eight scheduled meetings between the two teams this season and can be heard live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK, whtk.com and AHL Live.

The Amerks will host their second annual "Sweets in the Suites," a one-night special ticket promotion designed to work in conjunction with the spirit of Halloween. Children 12 and under who arrive in costume will receive a free ticket to the game with the purchase of one adult ticket. As part of the festivities, all children can trick or treat during the first intermission of the game up in the suite level and in the main concourse of The Blue Cross Arena. During the game, there will be a costume contest for kids and adults with the winners taking home an Amerks' Prize Pack. Lastly, the first 5,000 fans tonight will take home an Amerks' magnet schedule, courtesy of M&T Bank.
