Flight Players Head to NBA Summer Leagues

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., July 9, 2002 – Huntsville Flight center Eric Chenowith, point guard Mike Wilks and shooting guard Tyrone Ellis have been named to NBA rosters for the upcoming summer leagues in Long Beach, Orlando, Boston and Salt Lake City.

Chenowith has been named to the New York Knicks summer league team that will participate in the ShawÂ’s Pro Summer League 2002 from July 15-21 in Boston. Chenowith, a 2001 second-round draft selection of the Knicks, will join No. 25 overall selection in the 2002 NBA Draft Frank Williams from Illinois and two-year NBA veteran Lavor Postell on the roster. Chenowith averaged 9.8 ppg and 6.1 rpg in 56 NBDL games with the Flight and Greenville Groove last season.

NBDL Sportsmanship Award winner Mike Wilks has been named to the Milwaukee Bucks summer league team that will compete in the Orlando Summer League from July 9-13. Wilks, who averaged 9.1 ppg, 4.0 apg and 3.6 rpg in 44 NBDL games with the Flight and Mobile Revelers last season, and fellow NBDL point guard Scoonie Penn will lead the Bucks.

Ellis has been named to the Dallas Mavericks summer league team that will compete in both the Southern California Summer Pro League from July 7-21 in Long Beach, Calif. and the Rocky Mountain Revue, July 19-27 in Salt Lake City. Ellis, who will team with Greenville Groove center Thomas Hamilton, averaged 5.2 ppg and 1.7 rpg in 56 games with the Flight.

NBDL players appearing in NBA Summer Leagues include Asheville's Scoonie Penn (Milwaukee Bucks), Columbus' Tremaine Fowlkes (Los Angeles Clippers) and Livan Pyfrom (Golden State Warriors); Fayetteville's Omar Cook (Boston Celtics) and Terrell McIntyre (Orlando Magic); Greenville's Kimani Ffriend (Miami Heat), Thomas Hamilton (Dallas Mavericks) and Billy Thomas (Indiana Pacers); Huntsville's Eric Chenowith (New York Knicks), Tyrone Ellis (Dallas Mavericks) and Michael Wilks (Milwaukee Bucks); Mobile's Jamario Moon (Los Angeles Lakers); and North Charleston's Nate Green (Miami Heat) and Galen Young (Phoenix Suns).

The NBDL, the NBA's minor league includes the Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), North Charleston Lowgators (S.C.), Huntsville Flight (Ala.), Mobile Revelers (Ala.), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.), Columbus Riverdragons (Ga.), Greenville Groove (S.C.), and Asheville Altitude (N.C.). The league offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBA's umbrella. Eight NBDL players and one head coach were called up to the NBA during the NBDL's inaugural season and five executives have moved from NBDL teams to positions with major league organizations. Designed to help grow the sport of basketball both domestically and internationally, the NBDL serves as a source of on-court talent for the NBA's 29 teams and as a diverse human resources pool for the NBA and its teams by training employees in management, operations, public relations, sales and marketing positions in each NBDL city.
