Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Sudbury, ON - The Majors headed north to take on the Sudbury Wolves this evening. Mississauga showed why they are the top team in the east as they are coming home with an impressive 5-1 victory over the Wolves. With the win, the Majors record improves to 19-4-2-0 on the season. The win keeps the Majors in first place in the Eastern Conference.

The first period was evenly matched. Rob Flick got the scoring started for the Majors when he notched a powerplay goal, 12:20 into the first period. Sudbury answered back five minutes later when Kyle Tarini scored his fifth of the season at 17:30. Shots were 14-8 in favour of Mississauga.

The Majors dominated the second period and took advantage of several undisciplined Wolves penalties. Gaunce started the onslaught when he scored his first of the evening, on another powerplay, 1:41 into the second period. His goal put the Majors in front 2-1. Then Flick got back into the action when he scored his second goal of the night, on another powerplay, 6:00 into the second period. Kelly Geoffrey got into the act 1:07 later when he scored his first goal of the season to give the Majors into a commanding 4-1 lead. After the goal, Alain Valiquette was pulled in favour of Andrew Loverock. Valiquette let in four goals on 28 shots in 27:07 of action. Loverock could not stop the bleeding as David Corrente recorded his second goal of the season at 18:16 to put the Majors ahead 5-1. Derek Schoenmakers got his first assist in the Ontario Hockey League on Corrente's goal. The Majors outshot the Wolves in the second, 26-3.

Majors Captain Cameron Gaunce and Wolves forward John Kurtz started the third period in the box as they received off setting minor penalties to close out the second period. There was no scoring in the third period but there was plenty of action as tensions started to boil over. The two teams combined for 61 minutes of penalties in the game. Rob Flick's two goals were good enough to earn him the first star of the game. Brett Flemming and Derek Schoenmakers received the second and third star respectively. Chris Carrozzi started in net for the Majors and recorded his ninth win of the season. The Majors out shot Sudbury 54-20.

The Majors return home next Friday to take on the Barrie Colts, who sit just one point behind Mississauga for first place in the Eastern Conference.
