Western New York Flash News Release
ELMA, N.Y. (Thursday, May 7, 2015) - The Western New York Flash closes out a two-game homestand on Friday night, when reigning NWSL Champion FC Kansas City visits Rochester at 7 p.m. ET
About the Matchup
The Flash look to remain undefeated at home against the Blues, entering the match with a 2-0-1 record from the comforts of Sahlen's Stadium. The Flash have only fallen to Kansas City once, a 1-0 loss on June 4, 2014.
Both the Flash and Blues will be without their U.S. internationals as Western New York is missing Sydney Leroux and Whitney Engen, while Kansas City will be without Becky Sauerbrunn, Heather O'Reilly, Amy Rodriguez and Lauren Holiday. The six players are currently in California, training with the U.S. Women's National Team in preparation for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup, which kicks off on June 6 in Canada.
Flash Last Game
The Flash come into Friday's game on the heels of its first win of the season, a home opening 3-1 victory over the Boston Breakers. The Flash went down 1-0 in the first 15 minutes, but scored three unanswered goals to earn its first three points of the year.
Rookie midfielder Samantha Mewis got things started with her first professional goal in the 23rd minute, heading in a set piece from Becky Edwards. Edwards then capitalized herself, completing a pretty give-and-go with Lynn Williams to put the Flash head for good. Leroux, in her last game with the Flash before the World Cup, scored her first goal of the season in the 88th minute, adding insurance to the lead.
With a goal and assist in the game, Becky Edwards earned NWSL Week 4 Player of the Week honors as selected by the media.
Kansas City Last Game
After opening the season with two losses, Kansas City picked up its second-straight win on Saturday - a 2-0 win over the Houston Dash. Just before the first half closed, Liz Bogus put the Blues up 1-0 and then the team scored again quickly out of the half, as Shea Groom made it 2-0 on her first professional goal.
