Western New York Flash News Release
ELMA, N.Y. ( Thursday, July 24, 2014 ) - On Friday night the Western New York Flash finishes its current three-game, and final, homestand of the season as the Boston Breakers pay a visit to Sahlen's Stadium for the second time this season. With three points in the 7:30 p.m. contest the Flash would move into a two-way tie for fifth place with the Chicago Red Stars.
The game will be live-streamed on the NWSL's official YouTube channel and can be watched by clicking the link here . Fans can also follow live play-by-play at the Flash's official Twitter page, @WNYFlash, and can join the conversation by using the hashtag #WNYFvBOS.
Friday is Project Pink Night for the Flash, an annual game for breast cancer awareness that will this year benefit the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester. The Flash will wear one-game only pink jerseys that will be raffled off for charity, and will also feature basket raffles throughout the game. Many of the baskets are designed by Flash players, with some coming from local organizations and professional sports teams. 100% of all proceeds from the raffles will be donated to the BCCR.
Western New York (7-9-3, 24 points) is coming off a 1-1 draw with second-place FC Kansas City. It was just the third time this season the Flash has drawn a game, tied for second-least in the league. Despite falling behind early, the Flash was able to come from behind and tie the game for the first time this season.
FC Kansas City opened up the scoring when Lauren Holiday found Sarah Hagen on a long ball over the top. Hagen then chipped the ball over an onrushing Kelsey Wys to put the visitors up 1-0, with her third goal in just four appearances for the Blues this season.
The Flash was able to find the equalizer through Sam Kerr. Rookie Haley Palmer sent a cross into Carli Lloyd. Lloyd headed it forward to the Australian, who was able to send the ball past Nicole Barnhart with a header of her own. It was Kerr's seventh goal of the year, surpassing her six goal total from last season.
The draw wasn't enough for the Flash to move upward on the NWSL table, as the team currently sits in sixth place. With just four games left in the season, the Flash is four points out of the final playoff spot.
Boston is currently at the bottom of the league table with a record of 3-13-2 (11 points) this season, and is coming off a 6-3 loss against Portland Thorns FC. It was the most goals the Breakers have ever allowed in team history, and extended the club's losing streak to three games.
The game was the first of six regular season games that will air on the ESPN networks this season. The Flash will be featured on ESPN2 on August 13th in its final home game against Sky Blue FC. ESPN will also air the NWSL's post season, with both semifinals and the championship game available on ESPN2.
A win on Friday would clinch the season series against the Breakers, as the Flash won the first contest by a score of 2-1. The Flash are 1-1-0 at Sahlen's Stadium against the Breakers all-time. Due to Portland Thorns FC and the Washington Spirit's 1-1 tie on Wednesday, three points would move the Flash into a two-way tie for fifth place in the NWSL standings.
Tickets for Friday's game can be purchased at wnyflash.com or by calling the Sahlen's Stadium Box Office at (585) 454-KICK. The Box Office will also be open for walk-up sales through game time on Friday.
