Western New York Flash News Release
ELMA, N.Y. ( Saturday, March 28, 2015 ) - The Western New York Flash picked up its second victory of the preseason, defeating visiting Syracuse University 8-1 at Sahlen Sports Park on Saturday morning. Rookie midfielder Samantha Mewis and forward Kristen Edmonds led the way for Western New York, both totaling five points on the day.
The Flash went up 1-0 in the 10th minute on its second corner kick of the game. After the Orange defense cleared the ball from the 18, defender Jaelene Hinkle sent a lofted cross back to the far post that fellow back Brittany Taylor was able to win. Taylor quickly tapped the ball back to the middle, where Toni Pressley was waiting to send it into the net.
After an own goal by the Orange in the 34th minute, Jasmyne Spencer scored her second goal of the preseason at the 40-minute mark, putting the Flash up by three. Midfielder Becky Edwards won a ball, volleying it forward to Camilla Kur. Kur collected the pass then fed Spencer through the defense before the speedy forward netted it low and to the left.
Jordan Angeli extended the lead to 4-0 in first half stoppage time, heading the ball in after a corner kick.
By the 53rd minute, the Flash went up 6-0 with goals from Edmonds and Mewis. First, Mewis found Edmonds in the box and she sent it in for her second goal of the preseason. Then Mewis took it on her own, blasting a shot from 25-yards out past the goalkeeper.
Syracuse's lone goal came 62 minutes in, when Jessica Vigna found teammate Sheridan Street on a run through the backline. Street was able to strike the ball over Chantel Jones, who took over in net minutes prior.
Edmonds, who entered the game at the start of the second half, closed things with two consecutive assists, leading to the 8-1 final. First, Edmonds found Mewis who tallied her second goal in the 74th minute. Then, at the 90-minute mark, Ajara Nchout Njoya scored her first goal of the preseason off an assist from Edmonds.
