Western New York Flash News Release
ROCHESTER, NY - The Western New York Flash (3-3-0) used four goals in the first half to propel them to a 5-2 victory over Sky Blue FC (2-3-1). Jess McDonald led the effort with a first-half brace with three other Western New York players adding to the tally.
Jaelene Hinkle crossed a corner kick into the box in the 5th minute that connected with McDonald's head for the first goal of the evening. The Flash did not let up as they kept the ball in Sky Blue FC's defensive half for most of the first half. Sam Mewis scored her third goal of the season on a header, just out of the reach of Sky Blue goaltender Caroline Stanley, to double the Flash lead in the 19th minute. Just minutes later, Makenzy Doniak placed a ball into the box that found the foot of Lynn Williams to put the Flash up 3-0. To close out the half, McDonald scored her second of the game just before the whistle to increase the lead 4-0 going into the second half.
Sky Blue FC came out looking for a goal in the beginning of the second half, and finally put one on the board as U.S. National Team member Kelley O'Hara fired one past Sabrina D'Angelo in the 55th minute. The Flash responded in the 61st minute as Michaela Hahn took a long pass from Hinkle in stride to score her first professional goal. In the 87th minute, Flash forward Taylor Smith was whistled for a foul in the box. Sky Blue FC converted the penalty kick to cut the Flash lead to 5-2, but that remained the last tally for the night. Hinkle and Alanna Kennedy were each credited with two assists, and D'Angelo made three saves in the win.
The Flash will remain home in Week 7 as they play host to U.S. National Team member and former Flash player Whitney Engen and the Boston Breakers. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. ET. Tickets for the match are available at wnyflash.com/tickets.
