Flames Name Glen Gulutzan as Head Coach

Calgary, AB - The Calgary Flames announced today that they have named Glen Gulutzan as head coach. Gulutzan joins the Flames after spending the past three seasons as an assistant coach with the Vancouver Canucks.
Gulutzan, a native of Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan, brings 15 years of coaching experience to the club. Prior to serving the Canucks, the 44-year-old was the head coach of the Dallas Stars for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons and before that, he led the American Hockey League's Texas Stars for a pair of campaigns. In 2009-10, he took the AHL's Stars to the Calder Cup finals.
Gulutzan played junior hockey in the WHL with Moose Jaw, Brandon and Saskatoon, then two years with the University of Saskatchewan, before playing professionally for seven seasons. His coaching career began in the final four seasons of his playing career when he served as a player-assistant coach for the Fresno Falcons of the West Coach Hockey League, including in 2001-02 when they won the league's championship.
Gulutzan took over the reigns as head coach for the East Coast Hockey League's Las Vegas Wranglers in the 2003-04 campaign. He has a familiarity with the Flames organization as all six years he spent with the club they were Calgary's ECHL affiliate. Gulutzan had a record of 254-124-55 over the half-dozen seasons, including three straight where the Wranglers had 100+ points (2005-06 - 2007-08) - a first for any ECHL team. He also won the ECHL's Coach of the Year honours in 2005-06.
In 2009, the Stars organization bought Iowa's defunct American Hockey League franchise and moved it to Austin where it became the Texas Stars. Glen Gulutzan was named the first head coach of the club and held that role for two seasons, including 2009-10's Calder Cup final campaign. He then assumed the head coaching position with the NHL's Stars for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. After Gulutzan and the team parted ways in 2013, he was quickly brought on board with Vancouver and served as an assistant coach there for the last three years.
Glen, his wife Nicole, and their four children (Emma (15), Brielle (13), Landen (11), and Grace (9)) will make the move to Calgary this summer.
