
Flame To Honor Barron Collier Girls Basketball Team This Saturday

FORT MYERS, Fla., March 22 - The Florida Flame, presented by Century 21 Sunbelt Realty, will honor the 2006 FHSAA Class 5A Girls Basketball State Champion Barron Collier High School squad this Saturday night, March 25, as they host the Roanoke Dazzle in NBA Development League action at Germain Arena at 7 p.m.
In a special first quarter presentation, members of this season's championship squad will receive a large commemorative plaque from The Sportsmen's Club of Southwest Florida and the Flame. The commemorative plaque, to be prominently displayed at Barron Collier High School, will feature all coaches, team members, and support staff from the Cougars state title run. Cougars' players will also participate in the Fan Tunnel during the starting lineups of Saturday's game.
All friends, family, and fans are encouraged to attend. A special ticket price of $7 is available to all fans and students coming to see the state champions by calling Pat Eberle in the Florida Flame office at (239) 561-8130.
Led by Head Coach Mike Hamburger and FHSAA Tournament MVP, Courtney Jacob, the Cougars finished 31-2 overall and defeated No. 1 ranked Winter Haven in the 5A title game, 43-36, to earn the first-ever high school basketball state championship in the 84-year history of Southwest Florida sports. Barron Collier won its final 18 games to earn a No. 16 ranking in Sports Illustrated's Girls High School Basketball Power Rankings on February 28.
The Florida Flame is the official D-League affiliate of the NBA's Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Orlando Magic. Showcasing the best young talent in professional basketball outside of the NBA, the Flame play a 48-game schedule during the 2005-06 season with 23 home games at Germain Arena. Led by a group of local investors, the Flame is now in its second season of providing affordable, family entertainment to sports fans throughout Southwest Florida.
The NBA Development League includes the Albuquerque Thunderbirds (N.M.), Arkansas RimRockers (Little Rock), Austin Toros (Texas), Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), Florida Flame (Ft. Myers), Fort Worth Flyers (Texas), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.) and Tulsa 66ers (Okla.). The Bakersfield Jam (Calif.) will compete in the league beginning with the 2006-07 season.
The D-League offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBA's umbrella. Forty-two (42) players have been called up to the NBA on 62 separate occasions. Eleven (11) former D-League coaches, six athletic trainers, 14 referees and 30 front office executives have also been called up since the start of the league's inaugural season in November 2001.
